What are Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Tooth-colored fillings use a composite resin material to replace decay that is found in one or more of your teeth. Fillings can last for years before they’ll need to be replaced. Tooth-colored fillings are free of any type of metal and are safely placed in the mouth. They are matched with the rest of your teeth to create a natural-looking finish.
Why would you need a Tooth-Colored Filling?
Most often, patients need a tooth-colored filling because they have one or more cavities. The decay in the tooth is removed and the small hole that is made is filled with composite resin. This composite material is then hardened into place and blends nicely with the rest of the tooth. Alternatively, a patient may want a tooth-colored filling to replace older amalgam (metal) ones. The older filling can be removed and replaced with a newer, metal-free material.
What makes you a good candidate for Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Most patients who have a cavity and need a filling will be good candidates for the procedure. Fillings are ideal for both pediatric as well as adult patients. The purpose of the filling is to replace the decay that is in the tooth, preventing the cavity from getting worse and requiring a complete root canal. Because the tooth-colored filling will last for years, you’ll find it to be a wonderful alternative to other restorative options.
What happens during the procedure for Tooth-Colored Fillings?
First, Dr. Kang will remove the decay from the tooth. Once all of the decay is removed, the small hole is prepared for the composite resin material. Before the filling is placed, we match the color of the composite to your tooth so that it blends beautifully and seamlessly. We then pour the composite resin into the tooth and harden it with a specialized curing light. The filling procedure is finished and you’re all ready to go home. If more than one filling is needed, we can place multiple fillings at the same appointment so long as they are on the same side of the mouth. This prevents your entire mouth from being numb at the same time.
